What is the Guardian Angel System?
The Guardian Angel system is a gentle, non‑intrusive way to help people feel safer and more supported at home. It combines a small, home‑based monitoring kit with optional wellbeing phone calls, creating a balance of discreet technology and real human connection.
The system was developed to meet the needs of people living in rural areas, those living alone, and anyone who would benefit from knowing someone is quietly looking out for them.
How the Home Monitoring Works
The home-based part of Guardian Angel uses small sensors - not cameras or microphones - to notice movement, temperature, light levels, and front‑door activity in key areas of the home. It simply plugs into a power socket and connects securely via WiFi, and we can provide WiFi if needed.
Once installed, the system learns a person’s usual daily pattern. If something seems unusual, such as a long period of inactivity, our team checks in by contacting the person’s nominated emergency contact. It’s passive, simple to use, low‑energy, and requires no action from the person being supported.
Technology alone can’t tell us how someone feels, which is why the Sunshine Service is such an important part of Guardian Angel system. For people who choose it, our trained volunteers and staff make warm, friendly wellbeing calls at suitable times of day.
These conversations offer companionship, reassurance, and a human touch that helps reduce loneliness - something the World Health Organisation recognises as a growing public health challenge. The monitoring helps us notice changes; the calls help us understand the person behind the routine.

Guardian Angel was created from real-life experiences of caring for family members living alone in rural areas, and it has grown into a complete support system shaped by the needs of communities in Dumfries & Galloway. It’s affordable, secure, environmentally efficient, and never tied to long-term contracts.
Families and carers can also log in to check activity, helping share responsibility without the pressure falling on one person.
